Bowl Leaf

A Bowl of Water in the Microwave?
My mom always leaves like a bowl or a cup of water in the microwave. It’s very annoying to have to move the bowl around when using the microwave and she always yells at me for not putting the bowl back in. For the life of me, I can’t figure out what it does! She swears its good for the microwave. Is she insane like I think she is? Or is there a reason to the bowl?
She doesnt know why.
The school of thought is (or use to be):
The water is to help absorb some of the energy in the microwave when there is very little to heat up. If you start it and run it with nothing, or very little in it, it tends to damage the main components inside the oven. The water helps disspiate some of this energy and therefore lengthens the life a little more. If you have a substantial item in the oven, you don’t need to use the water, but if you put in a small slice of pizza say, then you could use the water. It’s not critical to use the water, but it makes it easier on the oven in the long run.
